Is Renton Haunted?

Ghosts at the 2nd & Burnett Garage?

Is there something strange in the neighborhood?  Where the 2nd & Burnett garage now stands, the home of Dr. Hugh Adams once stood.  While it was still standing, people claimed It was haunted. While an article in the July 24, 1929, Ellensburg Daily Record, tells of the illness of Dr. Adams' mother, no mention is made of "other worldly events" at his home.

Jimi Hendrix's Final Resting Place

Few people know that in 1961, Jimi left Seattle to enlist in the United States Army. In November of 1962, he earned the right to wear the "Screaming Eagles" patch for the paratroop division. Jimi now rests in Greenwood Memorial Park at NE 3rd and Monroe streets.  One visitor plugged a set of headphones into the ground at the site, and proclaimed:  "Now I can tune into Jimi."

Just When You Thought it was Safe to go back into the Water

There is a legend among members of the Duwamish tribe that tells of a monster lurking in the Cedar River sucking down swimmers and boaters. The site they warn you about is in the river right where NE 5th Street and the Maple Valley Highway.

Renton's First Legal Hanging

On February 4, 1877, at Agnew's Saloon on Renton's Walla Walla Avenue, John Thompson got into a barroom fight. The brawl moved out onto the street. A man named Solomon Baxter tried to break up the fight, and Thompson stabbed him in the stomach. Baxter died the next day. A jury found Thompson guilty of murder. The King County sheriff carried out the hanging.

Escaped Convict

On July 8, 1902, escaped criminal Harry Tracy (1877-1902) and John Anderson, a man Tracy had kidnapped from Bainbridge Island three days earlier, were walking along the railroad tracks one mile east of Renton when they spotted two women, May Baker and Mrs W. J. McKinney, picking blackberries.

He makes them come with him to the nearby Gerrells residence. Once inside, he charms the ladies with dashing wit and a devil-may-care attitude. Even though they know him to be a killer, the women enjoy his conversation over dinner. At eventide, he barely escapes through a phalanx of lawmen, just as he has done many times since his escape from the Oregon State Penitentiary a month earlier.  He escaped down the Black River.
